Nevertheless, Luminar is off to a strong start and Russell has his work cut out for him. China’s Geely Group which owns Volvo Car Group also has a separate relationship with Baidu BIDU to develop intelligent electric cars. Reached out to the recruiter by phone and email within 10 minutes of waiting to verify whether the interview would still take place. Waymo will be providing L4 systems for vehicles across the Volvo Car Group including the Volvo, Polestar and Lynk & Co brands. Was approached by the senior technical recruiter from Luminars Orlando office for a phone screen and set up a time to do so. That’s a big goal and Luminar has some big competition including Waymo which also struck a deal last year with Russell’s first customer, Volvo. Luminar wants to supply the industry with fully capable ADS that goes onto the vehicles that people buy, not just on the robotaxis that they hail for a quick ride across town. That’s probably a wise course of action, especially for a young company. Ultimately, you know, we decided not to do that.”Ĭameras and radar (at least traditional automotive radar) are largely commodity items now and Russell admits “If it's not going to be a breakthrough, we're not going to do it, we want all of our efforts invested in things that are gonna make a 10x impact.” We've had programs and we've done a lot of analysis for it. When asked if Luminar plans to expand its sensing capabilities beyond lidar to radar and cameras Russell responded ”We've thought about it. Ödgärd Andersson, CEO of Zenseact Zenseact The plan is to continue the collaboration with Zenseact with Luminar taking the responsibility for applying the full-system to vehicles from any OEM customers that select it. The hope for Luminar is that Volvo is the first of many customers for Sentinel.

The Sentinel system also includes a multi-camera system and radar provided by Zenseact and Luminar combines Zenseact’s machine vision and radar signal processing with its lidar processing into the full perception system.
LUMINAR ORLANDO SOFTWARE
Since it began work on its lidar sensors, Luminar was also developing the software to build an understanding of the world around the car from the point cloud provided by the laser sensor. Under the partnership between Luminar and Zenseact, Luminar had primary responsibility for developing the sensing and perception capabilities while the Swedish company took on the path planning and control. Luminar is an autonomous vehicle sensor and software company with the vision to make autonomy safe and ubiquitous by delivering the only lidar and associated software that meets the industry’s stringent performance, safety, and economic requirements.

When Autoliv spun off its electronics and sensor business as Veoneer, the new company got the stake in Zenuity. Zenuity was a joint venture initially formed by Volvo and supplier Autoliv ALV to develop ADS. Luminar was selected by Volvo as its lidar provider several years ago and initially began working with Zenuity on this program.
